Will Breast Augmentation Increase the Risk of Breast Cancer?

Mia asked:

I am considering a breast Augmentation surgery but I am concerned because Breast cancer runs in my family.  I am curious if you can tell me if you breast augmentation will increase my chances of  developing breast cancer.  I already know the doctor will be able to tell me but I don’t want to waste the time for a consultation if the answer is yes.

Thanks for any help you can give!

Our Answer:

Mia, we definitely understand your concern and are pleased to tell you that all of the studies that we have done to this date have shown the breast implants do not increase the risk of contracting breast cancer in any way, shape or form.  Some studies have shown a decrease in the risk of contracting breast cancer but you can read way more about it at this study from the National Cancer Institute.

You can discuss with your doctor some of the ramifications of breast augmentation surgery though as it can create some challenges with mammograms and detecting breast cancer in the years ahead but your doctor can discuss this in great detail with you once you get in for a consultation.

Hope that helps.

No it does not increase your risk of breast cancer but as the author said above, it can make mammograms a pain and creates challenges in detecting cancer. Nothing that can’t be overcome but something to discuss with your doctor.

No Breast implants will not cause breast cancer, but they can create issues discovering a breast cancer. It is difficult to image the breast tissue in a woman that has implants because the implant hides quite a bit of breast tissue, so it is harder to find an early breast cancer on these screening mammograms.
