Breast Augmentation Incision Care
One of the keys to a successful breast augmentation surgery is to pay attention and follow the instructions of your doctor implicitly and when it comes to breast augmentation incision care, this is especially important. The skill of your doctor will play a large part in the success of your breast augmentation surgery but so will your own execution of the aftercare instructions that you are given by your surgeon.
If you follow the directions carefully and everything goes as planned then you should enjoy a trouble free recovery with no issues with your incisions and the scars should fade away to almost invisible over time.
What To Expect Following Surgery
In the first few days following your surgery you can expect to have some pain and discomfort that will vary depending on what type of surgery you elected to have. Some procedures are more painful than others and all people will react to the surgery differently but it’s a safe bet that you can expect some discomfort but nothing that shouldn’t be able to be controlled with medication.
Within a few days of your breast augmentation surgery, the dressings will be removed from your breasts and your doctor will replace this with a surgical bra that will provide compression to your breasts and help them heal and settle a little bit. If you do have any stitches that need to be removed, then they will be taken out somewhere between seven to 10 days in most cases. Until they are removed it’s absolutely critical that you keep them dry, keep them covered with SteriStrips and do not apply any kind of lotion or cream unless directed by your doctor. Your goal is to get the incision closed and to begin the healing process.
Breast Augmentation Incision Scars
Proper incision care is necessary for two reasons, the first being it’s an open wound into your body and you want to make sure it remains clean and dry and that you minimize the risk of infection. The sooner you can get the skin to graft back together and close that wound the better for your short and long term health. The other part of the equation is that you want to make sure your incisions heal nicely and do not tear once they are closed to minimize the scar tissue that may be formed.
Most women have some level of anxiety around what kind of scars they will be left with following breast augmentation surgery. You can expect that your scars will be bright pink and very visible for the first few months following surgery. Slowly over time they will fade to a faint white color and become much less visible than before. You will never be able to get rid of them completely but you can minimize the appearance with proper care.
If after a year or so has passed then you still have options that you can discuss with your doctor including laser surgery and other treatments. Until that time, what is critical is that your properly care for your breast augmentation incisions. Care needs to be taken for the first few months not to tear that incision line as it will be a bit more tender and susceptible than it would have been pre-surgery. Consult your doctor for more specific advice.
